Please provide a short personal biography about yourself

I grew up in North Brisbane, I’m 30 years old and the Queensland Security Solutions Service Manager at Access Hardware. I completed my schooling here in Brisbane and graduated year 12 in 2010. From here I started my apprenticeship with Access Hardware and have slowly climbed the ranks to my current role.

I’m in a great position in my career that I get to both lead a great team of Locksmiths as well as still get on the road and do work. Being a SCEC Locksmith this helps with being able to go and do work in places where many would never go.

Outside of work I like camping and getting outdoors with my young family.

What are some of the skills and abilities necessary for someone to succeed as a locksmith?

There are a few skills and abilities necessary to be a successful locksmith, but one of the main ones is to be a good listener and learner. We also need to be creative and think outside the box to solve any problem that comes our way.

I believe communication is key; the ability to communicate with your clients, suppliers and colleagues is an important skill to develop. Being flexible is another important skill I believe is required, everyday doesn’t always go to plan so we need to be flexible and adapt ourselves to achieve the best outcome for every situation.

Problem solving is a skill that is required for a Locksmith. Our jobs require us from getting “Point A” (Lock not on door, lock not opening) to “Point B” (Lock installed, lock opened). Getting between these points always has its challengers and being able to solve your way through it will help you get through the other side of the jobs easier.

What key issues do you think will affect the locksmith industry in the coming decade and how do you think these should be approached?

Over the last 12-13 years of being in the industry, I have found that the traditional Locksmithing still has its place, but it is starting to come to an end as we are replacing locks and hardware instead of repairing. Traditional Locksmiths that aren’t willing to adapt to the next chapter of our industry will struggle with the demand of the customers’ needs. Customers are looking at how their problem can be fixed as quickly, efficiently and cost effective as possible. With people wanting to live a more autonomous life we will see technology take over the security industry even more than it has now.

In the current climate within the industry, we’re seeing a lack of skilled labour. I believe this is from companies not investing in apprentices. They’re the future of our trade and without being able to train and pass on our skills and knowledge; we’re going to slowly push our trade backwards.

Tell us why you should be Australia’s best young locksmith.

Being my last year that I can apply for ABYL I’ve been able to have a good look at what I am doing as a locksmith and the route I’ve taken as a commercial locksmith has been the best thing I’ve done in the industry. I’ve found over my time as a locksmith that the most tense and busy times bring out the best or worst in people and how we react as a team to support each other to move forward together to achieve greatness.

Having the opportunity to win the title of “Australia’s Best Young Locksmith 2023” would provide a valuable stepping stone in the direction I want to travel with my career. It will give me with the opportunity to have my name and Access Hardware’s name out in the market and show that we can produce great young locksmiths and we’re not just a hardware supply company but a force to be reckoned with.

Having this type of acknowledgement and reassurance that I’m on the right path would help me give young locksmiths in the industry a voice and show that we can make valuable contributions and we can bring the industry into the 21st century with our unique abilities and youthful eyes, without forgetting the Locksmithing history.
